MISO Wind Module is a Breeze
With the release of 5.0.02, GenManager MISO provides a separately licensable Intermittent Resource (Wind) module that allows users to:

• Forecast and submit expected MW output for wind locations
• Create and submit day-ahead offers for wind units
• View and manage IR and DIR forecast data in the real-time market

Managing wind resources is becoming more important to ISOs and market participants as mandates for renewable energy generation increase. As of June 1st, MISO introduced the ability for participants to offer wind energy fully into its economic dispatch system under the Dispatchable Intermittent Resources (DIR) resource designation.

PCI's Wind Module supports MISO's initiative by providing end-to-end business workflows for both non-dispatchable and dispatchable intermittent wind resources:

• Querying and downloading of NOAA Wind Forecast data
• Offering DIR into the DART system using GenManager Bid Formulator
• Submission to the ISO of future period forecast data: DA IR Forecasts (CSV for manual upload), RT Hourly IR/DIR Forecasts, and RT DIR 5-min Maximum Limits
• Querying resource 5-minute MISO wind forecasts and submitted data, per location, on an hourly basis (IR and DIR) and sub-hourly basis (DIR only)
• Reviewing, through dedicated screens, of forecast and submitted data per location and time period.
• Editing and saving of forecast data to GenBase Unit Schedules

The PCI MISO Wind Module provides a user-friendly set of screens and tasks for the wind generation management. In the future, PCI plans to extend this functionality to other ISOs as well.

In Case.
Here's some insight on how PCI keeps energy companies like yours in focus. This month, we talked with Tracy Ching at CDWR.

Company
California Department of Water Resources

Background
The California Department of Water Resources operates the State Water Project, which provides drinking and irrigation water for 25 million Californians and about 750,000 acres of farmland. DWR is the largest consumer and the third largest generator of electricity in California. DWR was faced with a large challenge to meet the California ISO's Market Redesign and Technology Upgrade initiative, and was given a short timeframe to implement a system that would handle DWR's scheduling and settlements needs.

Solution
With DWR and the California ISO located only miles apart, it was evident that PCI had a presence and played an instrumental role in the California ISO's market redesign. PCI was a leader for handling all of the schedules bound for the California ISO. PCI delivered GenManager and GenPortal on short notice to meet the tight implementation timeline with success.

Results
Most importantly, DWR is able to comply with CAISO's rapid changes to the marketplace. But more than that, we now have a tool that integrates our workflows which were manual in the past. Our list of benefits is large and some examples include: integrating outage management with day-ahead scheduling, which has helped eliminate missed schedules due to unit derates, more effective management of shadow settlements and charge code validations, and templated scheduling.

U.S. Energy Use per Person
Energy use per person stood at 214 million British thermal units (Btu's) in 1949. The rate generally increased until the oil price shocks of the mid-1970s and early 1980s when the trend reversed for a few years. From 1988 on, the rate held fairly steady until the 2008-2009 economic downturn. In
2009, 308 million Btu's of energy were consumed per person, 44% above the 1949 rate.
