Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Selects PCI for Coordinated Thermal and Hydro Optimization, Deal Management, Market Interfacing and Asset Operations Implementation

April 9, 2015 – Norman, OKPCI is pleased to announce that Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has selected PCI to provide complete generation portfolio optimization of both thermal and hydro resources. The implementation includes multiple components of the PCI Generation Supply Management System (GSMS) including Deal Management, Market Interface and Outage Management capabilities. SMUD selected PCI after an extensive evaluation that encompassed numerous demonstrations across multiple functionalities as well as an in-depth technology review.

“We sought an energy trading resource platform to optimize SMUD energy resources by automating market activities to deliver least–cost dispatch capabilities,” said Chaise Vidal, SMUD Energy Trading Specialist. “The ability to optimize our complex hydro network jointly with our thermal assets and the ability to frequently re–optimize our dynamic renewable portfolio was a key decision criterion in selection.”

The PCI implementation is nearing completion with go-live expected 6-months from the project start date. The functionality to be implemented includes the optimization of generation assets, the management of deals and outages, and the ability to interface with the CAISO market.

“We have enjoyed a collaborative and efficient implementation project with SMUD, and we are excited to have them as a strategic partner and customer. The SMUD implementation represents another important milestone for PCI in joint optimization of a complex hydro network with thermal resources,” said Jason Kram, PCI Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
